THE CORRELATION BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND CIVIL SERVANTS RETIREMENT ANXIETY

To civil servants, the retirement day is often considered as a future threat that can cause anxiety. The presence of the anxiety in facing the retirement day is dominantly influenced by the emotional intelligence. Higher emotional intelligence can lead to a condition which is free from anxiety. On the contrary, lower emotional intelligence will result in anxiety within an individual. This research is, then, aimed at finding out the relation between the emotional intelligence and the anxiety in facing the retirement day that happens to the civil servants.

The population of the research covers all of the civil servants who work at UNS centrals office. There are 431 people who are included in the population. The sample is taken from the female and male workers with the following criteria: (a) hold the position as the civil servant, (b) must be between 51-55 or are closed to the retirement day, (c) do not possess another source of earning, and (d) hold the structural rate of III or IV to ensure that they have certain position in their divisions. The purposive sampling technique is used to get the samples. The populations that fit the criteria are 80 people. The data collection uses emotional intelligence scale and the anxeity in facing the retirement scale. The data is analyzed by using the analysis of product moment correlation.

The result of the analysis shows the number of the coeficient correlation (r) as much as -0.677 with the significance rate as much as 0.000 < 0.05. From the analysis, it can be concluded that there is a negative correlation between emotional intelligence and the anxiety of the civil servants in facing the retirement day. This means that the higher emotional intelligence is, the lower the anxiety in facing the retirement day becomes, and vice versa. The significance of the control of the emotional intelligence toward the anxiety is 45.8%.
